LEGEND OF THE NIGHTLAND
This is a true Florida story in every detail! In pre-Columbian Mocama society on the west side of Lake Okeechobee, Cannistanna is a beloved leader chosen by the Shaman Ollani. Ollani entrusts Cannistanna with a sacred artifact that lets him glimpse the Nightland, the tribe’s sacred afterlife. Jealousy erupts when Tefloani murders Ollani, poisons Cannistanna, and shatters the artifact into three pieces, scattering them across the Mocama realm. Tefloani and Cannistanna’s daughter Wewichicanna die from riccarra, a deadly poison planted to guard the hidden relics.
- Jump to the 1920s in Central America (British Honduras). Nat Corbyn, an American archaeologist, his wife Renee, and their daughter Boots, search for Mocama artifacts. They uncover one piece of the relic, are ambushed by local crooks, and Renee is killed by riccarra. Nat descends into grief and alcoholism while Boots falls victim to riccarra and slips into a coma.
-- Boots awakens in Okeechobee City to tell a bewildering story of the Nightland, guided by a talking osprey. A Seminole healer, Karenias “Karen” Littlefield, believes Boots and uses riccarra to cross into Nightland herself. There, Karen encounters Cannistanna and Wewichicanna, two ancestral spirits who reveal a long-guarded truth about the Nightland and the mortal world.
--The two worlds begin to bleed into one another as the 1928 hurricane lashes Florida. Ancestors, legends, and living descendants clash over duty, love, and survival. Boots, Karen, and Nat—now facing the consequences of their artifacts—must decide what they’re willing to fight for as memory and land are forever changed.
