History

Port Salerno is a charming fishing village situated on a picturesque stretch of coastline known as "the Treasure Coast."

The name was originally coined  in the 1960's by reporters from the Vero Beach Press Journal in honor of the numerous shipwrecks that have occurred along its sandy beaches.

Salerno, which was once the center of more than eight thriving fish houses, has a rich history as a site for both legal and illegal trade. The name derives from two notable locals, Hugh Willoughby and E.J. Ricou, who found the small tributaries and creeks reminiscent of Italy. Its coastal position and closeness to the Gulf Stream and the Bahamas drew a variety of individuals, including determined fishermen, bootleggers, rumrunners, and even notorious pirates.
